I researched many white noise machines and read many reviews before deciding on the Marpac 580. The 580 is less expensive than the 980 with no speed adjustment, but it performs quite adequately, and truthfully the speed control is unnecessary. The Marpac machines operate mechanically rather than electronically, which in my opinion is a more reliable way to go. Also these machines don’t experience sound or volume problems like other brands. The adjustable volume and tone can accomodate a very large room. The average bedroom requires much less than its maximum volume is capable of. The 580 is simple, basic, and sturdy. It performs well not only for children but adults too, drowning out typical city background noises. We like it so much, we have purchased two…and now my mother wants one. Everyone who has used it has remarked on how uninterrupted their sleep is. I highly recommend the Marpac 580

I was concerned when I read the review about the EMF rating and emailed the company. They promptly emailed me the following response that put my mind at ease:

The person who posted that comment is placed a Gauss meter directly against the housing of a Sleep Mate and took a reading on his amateur Gauss meter. He could take that same meter and walk by his refrigerator, bathroom or kitchen exhaust fans, or any device in his home that contains an electric motor and get similar readings. If the general public had any clue how much EMF is produced by cell phones and were concern about this being a cancer risk, they would be astonished. EMF exposure to concentrated levels from high voltage power lines or other circumstances where high levels of EMF can be measured at a great distance from the source should be considered a risk…Sleep Mate is not.
I can tell you for certain that the inventor of this product is 90 years old and he and his wife have used Sleep Mate on his nightstand nearly every night since 1962 and they are both in pretty good health (he recently broke his hip). Neither of them have ever had any form of cancer.
This product is in its fourth generation design and has been in use in one form or another for over 45 years.

My wife purchased one of these white noise generators for a vacation we were going on over a year ago. It is small and very lightweight with an eight foot long cord, which is nice and long. Its small size means that it fits easily into any luggage and takes up very little room on a night stand. The noise it makes is pleasantly “white,” which means that it doesn’t disturb you while reading in bed and yet it provides enough cover for the little noises that can sound so loud at night. The volume produced can be modulated by turning the top, making it louder or softer.
Overall, we are very pleased with our purchase of this item. We have experienced nothing but trouble free service from it, and we have even purchased a second one for the baby’s room. We love this item and give it our highest recommendations!

Unfortunately, my lovely bride, Mrs. Gorilla, is at times prone to snoring, gurgling, and other odd sounds in the night whilst in slumber. In years past, this would generally occur while she was laying on her back, and a gentle prod to her thigh would be enough to get her to roll to her side and quiet the veritable symphony of sounds. Lately, the noise has been occurring regardless of her position in bed, leaving me with two options – to lay awake until the racket subsides or move to another location. Neither seemed desirable.
At this point, I began to research the situation and came across this gizmo: the Marpac 580 Sound Screen and SleepMate Sound Conditioner. Try saying THAT three times fast. It’s just a fancy name for a small fan inside a plastic housing. The reviews seemed mostly positive and the price seemed right, so I was convinced to order one with all due speed.
I am happy to report that it has solved all issues and restored marital bliss. It has a “low” and a “high” setting on the switch – but these seem rather pointless. The real options for increasing or decreasing the noise it makes come from rotating the disk on top of the device as well as rotating the exterior plastic housing that constitutes the “sides” of the thing – basically – the larger the holes on the side and the more holes you “open” on top the louder it gets. I have mine set at full throttle, and to my ear it is QUITE loud, more than enough to mask any sounds coming from Mrs. Gorilla on the other side of the bed. It does not completely drown out all noise, but as I explain below, it masks it in a way that, at least for me, solves the problem.
I have it sitting atop the high dresser located about six feet or so from my side of the bed, versus on the night stand right beside me, and even from that distance it really is enough to mask any noise I might otherwise hear. I struggle to choose the right verb here: it “masks” or “blends” the noises I may or may not hear – it does not always “obliterate” them. Thus, I have woken up a couple of times while Mrs. Gorilla was snoring, realized I could still hear her, but found that I could focus on the steady whooshing sound of the device rather than her intermittent sawing of wood, and fall back to sleep. Apparently, for me anyway, such noises only become distressing when contrasted with absolute silence. When blended with a background white noise like this device makes, the sound of snoring is not a problem in the least. And for most of the other nighttime noises that might occur – those ARE genuinely covered up. This includes any odd noises the dog might make in the night, the sound of my teenage son galumphing up the stairs at midnight when I’m already in bed, and so on – and I definitely have been sleeping more soundly and comfortably.
I’ll leave it to a psychologist or an MD to explain why I no longer find the snoring noise so distressing when blended with a white noise generator – and thus conclude with a hearty recommendation: five stars, and four enthusiastic thumbs up (counting the two on my feet…)

I have to say that apartment living in southern California can really be a drag. We are all piled on top of each other – much like the barrios that are found along major waterways in central and south America. My neighbors are really loud drunks and they have a pitbull that also is a loud drunk. I also have neighbors on the other side who insist on playing ping pong until 2am. My two small and impressionable children have always been woken up by these neighbors shenanigans. I purchased the Marpac Sound Screen 580 with hopes of drowning out the loud laughter and the sound of crushing beer cans. I could not have been more pleased with my purchase. My children can sleep through the night as if we lived in a normal neighborhood. They are better rested and I am sleeping better knowing that the Sound Screen 580 is lulling my kids into a deep and satisfying slumber.
